Windows or Linux web hosting?

There are many considerations to think about when choosing a top web hosting service. Space, speed, protection, support—these are some of the things you’d probably have to assess when choosing a top web hosting service. But is the operating system of the server part of the factors you should consider? And will the operating system of the server used by the top web hosting actually make a difference?

Today, there are operating systems that are largely used on servers—the Windows operating system and the Linux operating system. Others use Unix, although the numbers are quite negligible and almost similar to Linux anyway. Needless to say, Windows is developed by Microsoft, while Linux is an open source system. Ideally, the operating system of the top web hosting you are using is not your decision to make; it is already a given. This is because the differences between the two are quite negligible. Some say web owners who use Microsoft-based web publishing programs should use Windows, but this isn’t exactly all encompassing, since Linux can support the likes of Frontpage and other Frontpage extensions. Other features such as Telnet access or ASP side scripting are usually available for Linux; while it isn’t instantly available for Windows, it supports these features. Of course, the basics such as HTML and JavaScript are also basic of both.

Therefore, when choosing a top web hosting service, the operating system is hardly a determining factor. It is the service of the top web hosting provider itself that should determine whether you will employ their services or not.
